The ISO/TC 211 Multi-Lingual Glossary of Terms has been compiled from International Standards developed by ISO/TC 211. Its purpose is to encourage consistency in the use and interpretation of geospatial terms. It is being made freely available to all interested people and organizations.

Reference Definitions
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) has developed a set of standards related to metadata, which are known as ISO Elements metadata standards. These standards provide guidelines and best practices for creating and managing metadata for various purposes, including data interchange, information retrieval, and data preservation. Here are some of the ISO metadata standards:

- access rights information

- access software

- accessibility

- accuracy

- active object
Definition: object which is capable of independent actions, and therefore capable of initiating interactions between itself and other objects without immediate prior external stimulation ISO 19132:2007

- addressee

- adjustable model parameters

- administrative source
Definition: source with the administrative description (where applicable) of the parties involved, the rights, restrictions and responsibilities created and the basic administrative units affected ISO 19152:2012, 4.1.1
- admitted term
Definition: term rated according to the scale of the term acceptability rating as a synonym for a preferred term ISO 1087-1:2000, 3.4.16, modified — the Note 1 to entry has been added.
- affine coordinate system
Definition: coordinate system in Euclidean space with straight axes that are not necessarily mutually perpendicular ISO 19111:2019(E), 3.1.1
- agency
Definition: legal relationship of a person (called the agent) who acts on behalf of another person, company, or government (called the principal) ISO 19153:2014, 4.2
- agent
Definition: one who acts on behalf of another ISO 19153:2014, 4.3
- aggregation <UML>
Definition: special form of association that specifies a whole-part relationship between the aggregate (whole) and a component part UML 1
- AIP edition
